Traveling solo all by yourself is an amazing experience and I highly recommend it to everyone. While learning about and seeing the world around you, you also learn heaps about yourself. You don’t discover how capable you are until you are traveling alone with only yourself to depend on. It is incredibly empowering. I wanted to share some tips for traveling solo that may help you from making some of the mistakes that I did. You will find a lot of it is trial and error and you will make mistakes no matter how many of these “Traveling Solo Tips” blog posts you read, but that is all part of the fun.

Important traveling solo tips

What are the important things you must keep in mind while traveling alone? Is it actually safe? Where should you go for your first solo travel? What are the must know tips you should rather have known before heading out for your first solo travel?

Below are some of the most important tips for traveling solo.

1Test the waters by taking a trip for a weekend

That still counts as traveling solo! You don’t have to go halfway around the world for several months to have the solo travel experience. Ease into traveling alone and see what you like and don’t like. Maybe start by going somewhere you feel comfortable, like a state or city a few hours away from home.

2At least do a little research and planning

Maybe you are someone who LOVES planning a trip just as much as going on one, but for those of you who like to fly by the seat of your pants, only do the basic planning.  For example, research the necessary documents you will need in order to enter your destination, book your accommodation for the first night, and arrange to arrive at your destination before dark so you can get your bearings and have time to change your accommodation if you don’t like it. While a lot of us love unplanned travel, if it is your first time traveling solo, please research well and plan out ahead.

3If you are lost, don’t look completely obvious

Keep your composure. Don’t wander around and look helpless. Ask help from a stranger you choose with your best judgment, not a stranger that chooses you. I usually look for a family.

4Be in constant touch with family and friends

Be it your mom or boyfriend or a close friend. Ensure that you keep in touch with some of them. Ensure that they know of your whereabouts. I generally send out my flight details, hotel/hostel reservation details to my brother and couple of close friends before I leave. Also, it is always better to update them on where you are currently or if there are any changes in your plans.

5Try to blend in

Research the normal garb of your destination. For example, in Thailand it is best to wear shirts that have a modest neckline and cover your shoulders, as well as pants that go below the knee. You don’t want to attract unwanted attention, especially if you are a solo female traveler. Additionally, wearing expensive jewelry, accessories, and clothes can make you a target for thieves.

6Register with your government as a citizen abroad

It’s a good idea to register as a citizen abroad with your government if you are traveling solo far away for a long period of time. Just in case something happens to you.

7Be careful when using public WIFI

Important information can easily be stolen if you are using public WIFI. Say you are booking a flight or room with your credit card while using public WIFI, then you could easily be sharing that information with someone else on the network. Be mindful of what you are doing while on public WIFI or use a VPN, which is an app you can download to protect yourself. It also allows you to use websites that may be blocked in certain countries.

8Trust your instincts

If your gut tells you some situation you are in or a person you are with is no good, then listen to that. Don’t ignore it, because you are usually right.

These are just some tips I offer from collective experience of many of my friends who are traveling solo. Even though I had read some similar articles before I went on my trip, no light reading prepares you for the real deal. Just be flexible and forgiving with yourself if you make a mistake.

Now, stop worrying. Be brave. Step out. Have fun. I wish you all the best.
