Introducing Sophie Bellamy (unedited)

After spending my twenties enjoying my dream career in the video production industry, I started to get itchy feet and my mind began drifting to my one true love: travel. Four weeks of annual leave just wasn’t satisfying my wanderlust anymore, so a couple of months before I turned 30 I left the comfort and certainty of my job and started planning a year-long trip to South America. I’m a huge advocate for independent adventures, and with a degree in journalism and loads of experience as a copywriter, creating a website to share tips, tricks and experiences of solo travel seemed like the new challenge that I was looking for. And so, https://tableforonetravel.com/ was born. I’m now travelling and writing as I go. What better way to get inspiration for a travel website than getting out there and travelling!

Sophie’s Travel Speak – Travelogue (unedited)

As I write this I’m one month into my South American adventure, and I’m having the time of my life. I’ve been on solo trips in the past but only for one week at a time, so before I left the UK I was apprehensive about how I’d find spending so much time away on my own. But, once I arrived I completely fell in love with the freedom of travelling solo.

I flew into Buenos Aires at the beginning of August, just before my 30th birthday. I chose to stay in a ‘party hostel’ to ensure that I’d have plenty of opportunities to meet people, and the place I selected did not disappoint. And so, I spent my first week in South America celebrating turning 30 with all my new travel buddies. It’s a brilliant blur of drinking gorgeous (and cheap) local wines, dancing to Reggaeton and having the most fascinating conversations with awesome people from all over the world. It’s safe to say that I’m unlikely to forget this birthday any time soon! Once the partying was done, I moved into an Airbnb in the San Telmo region of Buenos Aires and got stuck in to working on my website. I also took Spanish classes in an attempt to build on my very basic knowledge of the language (this is still very much a work in progress).

My plan for this trip is purposefully very loose so I can be open to invites and adventures, and after meeting a cool Belgian girl at a party we decided to take advantage of our equally non-existent plans and head to Uruguay together. We spent a week exploring Colonia del Sacramento and Montevideo together, then she headed off to see more of Uruguay and I decided to stay in Montevideo to catch up on my writing. That’s the thing about being a digital nomad: you have to travel slower to get more work done, so you really get a much more in depth experience of the places you’re staying.

Once I’ve had a couple of productive days here, my next stop is at the spectacular Iguazu Falls, where I’ll briefly cross over into Brazil. Then I’ll probably head west to Chile, via Paraguay and northern Argentina. Then from there, I’ll go north until my money runs out! I have a loose plan to meet up with a fellow solo traveller that I met back in Buenos Aires later in the year; we’re hoping to spend Christmas together on the beach with lots of cocktails and sunshine, but as we both have such loose plans it’ll be fun to see where we actually end up for the festive season. You see, that’s the joy of travelling alone, you can do what you want, when you want, with whom you want. And I wouldn’t have it any other way!

Her Favourite destinations:

Panama – it has everything – city life, beautiful beaches and lush jungle.

Austria – clean, safe and lots to see and do. Its central location means it’s so easy to combine it with other countries on the same trip, too.

Tanzania – safari is a must-do and Zanzibar is one of the most beautiful places on earth.

Top tips:

Panama – don’t miss the San Blas for a dose of desert island escapism.

Austria – get out of the cities and visit gorgeous countryside and vineyards.

Tanzania – try Konyagi, Tanzania’s super cheap and extremely potent gin-like drink.

Sophie’s Favorite Travel Quote:

Sophie says, “It’s not strictly a travel quote, but I have it written in the front of my travel journal for inspiration”. Below is her favourite quote.

“The woman who follows the crowd will usually go no further than the crowd. The woman who walks alone is likely to find herself in places no one has ever been before” – Unknown
